Chemical Peeling

Chemical Peeling

Rejuvenate your skin with a chemical peel

Chemical skin peels are suitable for use on the face and other areas of the body. The cost of your skin peel will depend on the recommended number of treatments and final prices will be confirmed at your consultation.

A chemical peel (or skin peel) is a technique used to smooth the texture of the skin, leaving you looking healthy and fresh-faced. Our advanced treatments remove the ageing upper layers of the skin using a chemical solution to reveal the youthful, newly formed skin underneath.

The ageing process can cause skin to look dull and tired, and since the appearance of the skin is one of the most prominent features, it’s also one of the hardest to conceal. The Anana Clinic’s chemical peels effectively remove this old layer of skin, allowing the new smooth layers below to show, helping you to look as young as you feel! As a clinic led by a highly experienced dermatologist we have the knowledge and the experience to tailor a skin ageing treatment and prevention plan to meet your personal and unique needs.

Chemical peels can help you achieve:

  • Smooth, healthy looking skin

  • An evened out complexion

  • Reduced areas of darker pigmentation

  • Reduced appearance of spots, acne and acne scars

Chemical peeling is a skin rejuvenation procedure that uses a chemical solution to remove the outer layers of the skin and to accelerate the removal of old, dead skin cells at the surface of the skin.

Chemical peeling promotes new cell growth resulting in thickening of the epidermis, deposition of collagen, reorganisation of structural elements, and an increase in dermal volume. The result is an improved clinical appearance of the skin, with fewer lines and decreased pigmentation.

Chemical peels are divided into three categories depending on the depth of the peel:

* Superficial peels penetrate the epidermis only

* Medium-depth peels penetrate the entire epidermis and papillary dermis

* Deep peels penetrate to the level of the midreticular dermis

The depth of the peel is dictated by a number of factors, including the chemicals applied and their concentration, the mode of application, skin type and its condition. In general, the depth of the peel determines the length of healing time, the rate of the potential adverse effects, and the overall results.

We offer a free consultation for chemical peeling and we will be able to advise you on which types of chemical peel will be most suitable to address your needs and how many chemical peel treatments are required.

Superficial Chemical Peels

Superficial chemical peels remove skin cells from the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) and can be performed by qualified beauty therapists as well as medical staff. As superficial chemical peels only affect the top layers of the skin you may need to have regular chemical peel treatments to maintain the effect.

Treatment takes just a few minutes, and your skin may feel pink and feel tight for a couple of hours after the treatment. Superficial chemical peels usually use combinations of alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) and betahydroxy acids (BHAs), eg: glycolic acid, lactic acid, salycilic acid and maleic acid.

Medium-depth Chemical Peels

Medium-depth chemical peels can remove skin cells from both the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) and the upper part of the dermis (the middle layer of the skin). These chemical peels are performed by qualified doctors and nurses. Medium chemical peels may need to be repeated every 6-12 months to maintain the effect of the treatment. It can take up to six weeks for the skin to return to normal.

Deep Chemical Peels

We do not currently offer deep chemical peels at the Anana Clinic. Please contact us to find out more about deep chemical peels.

First the skin is thoroughly cleansed with acetone or similar cleansers, and in some cases prepared using Vitamin A, Alpha Hydroxy Acid or other preparations. Chemical peels may be performed with local anaesthesia, which will numb the area to be treated.

Next, the doctor will carefully apply the chemical solution and monitor progress throughout the chemical peel. Usually the treatment is carried out in sections to ensure the best results and minimum side effects. Patients who find the treatment particularly uncomfortable may choose intravenous anaesthetic – please note, however, that this will prevent you from driving for several hours after the procedure. If stinging or burning sensations occur, a cold pack or cold air can be helpful. Chemical peel treatments typically take 30-45 minutes.

After your chemical peel treatment, your doctor will coat the treated area with protective gel. If you had a lighter chemical peel, no covering is necessary and you will be given post-operative instructions before returning home.

The skin will commonly go red and swollen over the following 24 hours. Once any initial burning has worn off, the area should not be painful, but may feel tight. Over the next few days the skin will dry and look like brownish leather. Vaseline should be applied several times a day to prevent cracking. Wash with water but avoid using soap. The skin will begin to peel between 5 and 7 days later, and must be left to come off at its own pace.

As soon as the skin has healed, makeup may be applied over the new, pink skin. Sometimes a secondary peel occurs during the second week in the form of dry scaling skin. Sunscreen is mandatory for at least three months, and moisturisers are helpful to encourage healing.

Chemical peel treatments can be repeated after three months, but this is not usually necessary. Peels can be repeated at any time in the future and will not harm the skin. The regular use of sunscreen will prevent further sun damage and therefore maintain the improved skin quality.

Scarring can sometimes occur when using strong acids, but is unusual with weaker ones. The most common causes of scarring are infection, and pulling off the skin before it is ready to naturally peel. Both of these are avoidable with a good post-treatment routine..

Cold sores may be activated in those prone to this kind of condition, however, anti-viral medication can prevent this. Increased pigmentation may also occur, but will resolve with time. This can be largely prevented by regular use of sunscreen for at least three months after the chemical peel.

Our experienced staff – during your free consultation – will examine your skin and apply a Designer Chemical Peel; one which will meet the demands and requirements of your skin by using a combination of different chemical peels.

The TCA skin chemical peel is designed to be used to fight the most noticeable signs of ageing, such as little lines, dry skin, and uneven skin tone. Four chemical peels are applied one week apart. TCA skin chemical peel can also be used to treat acne and acne scarring and areas on the hands, forearms and neck.

Designed to improve the appearance and health of your skin, Obagi blue skin chemical peel enables our experienced staff to achieve the best possible results for a broad range of skin conditions including:

* Epidermal and dermal pigmentation problems

* Fine lines, shallow stretchable scars and large pores

* Acne

Obagi Blue skin chemical peels remove the thin surface layers of aged and damaged skin from the face and other parts of the body. These dead skin cells are replaced by new ones, allowing the skin’s own clarity and tightness to resurface.

The Obagi Blue skin chemical peel can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, back, arms and legs and is appropriate for all skin types. Application of the chemical peel takes about 40-60 minutes, depending on the number of coats required.

You may experience a slight burning sensation that lasts a few minutes with each application. The aesthetician will use a fan to reduce any discomfort. The bluish tint of the peel will be gently washed off with a special cleanser immediately following the Obagi Blue skin chemical peel.
